Transgender Awareness Week
And the work that goes with it.
Transgender Awareness Week falls each year between November 13th–19th. This is a week of celebration, allyship, and community. The period culminates with November 20th marking Transgender Day of Remembrance; a day to memorialize those who have experienced violence, persecution, or death due to bias against their gender identity. Anodyne stands an advocate and ally for our transgender community.
With holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up, it can be difficult for individuals who are visiting families who do not support or accept them for who they are. As feelings of anxiety and stress arise, here are some of our published works that center the Trans experience.
Tom Infection of Vol.3 shares their experience as a transgender man and the apprehension they experience when visiting the doctor. Tom Infection’s work acknowledges the pain and alienation many feel when attending appointments and shows the viewer they are not alone.
Logan Elizabeth Craig’s poem, published Vol.1, contemplates the theme of transformation. The speaker comments on pain but also the eventual beauty and happiness that stems from change, the old emerging as something new.
More queer poetry, artwork and stories can be found in our recent Vol.6 – including Pushcart Prize nominees Katherine DeCoste’s ‘View Lab Report Here’ and Kelsey Britt’s ‘Revelations 31:2’.
Although this week of awareness highlights the ways in which the world still falls short of acceptance, Anodyne is here to advocate for a brighter future. We won’t back down.
